Whenever I set myself to a task I can be sure that disaster will surely ensue. Since I posted that I was starting this novel project I had received a flurry of urgent client requests to fix and update websites. My mum's knee has become infected and she's had to go back to hospital for an antibiotic drip. I've been wiped out with a pulled neck muscle and a cold (not a flu, luckily!). And, today, the teachers had a stop work meeting so the boys were here all morning making noise and asking for things.

Nevertheless, I finally sat down last night and got things started. First chapter is done and chapter two is coming fine so far. I'm looking at getting a few more words written this afternoon.  The current word count?

Starting's the hardest thing. And then it's just momentum. Good luck! And here's hoping the orbiting disasters leave you alone now.

Thanks Karen, although it is the momentum bit I usually have trouble with. Starting things is easy for me. Finishing them is the problem. This time though! And Bah! to the disasters. I'm gonna finish this thing regardless of what gets in the way.

A chapter and a bit in 1000 words? That's a gift, my friend.

And I guess this isn't the best time to ask about updating my website? :)

Not a gift, a miracle! You know the way my word counts can get away from me.

I think that because this is going to be more a mainstream novel of less than 100,000 words, and written in a very different voice, that the chapters will be a lot shorter and snappier. Its an experiment in working outside of spec-fic (although I know it will end up in that territory) and probably closer to my article style for 'Black: Australian Dark Culture' magazine than my normal fiction. First person, contemporary and slightly autobiographical make it easier for me to leave out all the detail and description I'd normally be itching to throw in.

And your website? Make a note to shoot me an email in 2 weeks? I'll be done with the majority of things by then :)

Time to write... only to the detriment of sleep :(

Here's hoping things settle down soon :)

And speaking of clients, give me a buzz when/if you need help with GRM - I've flicked notes etc based on conversations with Rowena but it was right as I started with Commbank so god only knows whether I made a scrap of sense!
