25 years ago - 40 years ago

25yrs ago John Lennon died. I was a 10yr old Beatles fanatic at the time (having inherited my mum and dad's 45 singles collection earlier that year) and remember it extremely well. My mum told me about the assasination when I got home from school and I remember that we cried together. He was an amazing artist.

On a happier note: 40yrs ago today the Beatles released their Rubber Soul album! Although their previous album (Beatles for Sale) had some slight divergences from the standard pop of I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and She Loves You, it wasn't until the release of Rubber Soul that the Beatles really showed what masterful song-writers and musicians they were. It was a real turning point from bubble-gum pop to writers of beautiful melodies and poignant lyrics - Norwegian Wood, Michelle, Girl... ahhh how sweet the sound.

If you've got a copy of Rubber Soul in your record/cd collection why don't you drag it out tonight and re-acquaint yourself? And, if you've got no idea what I'm talking about go and ask your mum and dad :)

Lastly, just took a quiz on what novel I should be writing (thanks nox_ulula for the pointer). Shoulda' guessed the result:

GenreGothics

GOTHICS! - Deep, dark, mysterious and melodramatic.
You are drawn to write tales of the shadows and
what might lurk there. Could it be Love? Or
Madness? Anne Rice and Brahm Stoker are your
guides.

25 years ago I was 14, and mad keen on music, gymnastics and roller skating. The Beatles had been part of my early childhood, as I shared a room with my sister, who was ten years older than me. Hence my taste in music has always had an "older" influence. The previous year I had gone from The Beatles melodies and a brief flirtation with ABBA and *gasp, shock horror* Leif Garrett, and launched straight into Status Quo, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Pavlos Dog etc. But the Friday night after John Lennon was killed our roller skating rink played nothing but Beatles, or Lennon's solo work. I have memories of a hundred or so people of all ages, skating around with tears streaming down their faces, changing to reminices on "When this song came out I was ..." For me, I still can't hear 'Watching The Wheels' without thinking of Lennons murder.

Music has always been huge in my life. But as I was still some months off being born when Rubber Soul came out I don't actually remember the hysteria of The Beatles. *g*
