It was here, and now it is almost gone! Blink and you'd have missed it, I reckon. They're already selling Hot-Cross Buns in Woolworths! What? Did I miss Valentine's Day as well as most of January?

So, here's what happened for me in the month that has just seemed to pass me by...

* Got a little bit of work done, and some old, 2007-work tidied away.

* Went to the launch of Nathan Burrage's Fivefold at Galaxy Bookshop. Nathan's book was Number 1 in the Galaxy Top 10 that week, and deservedly so - it is a great book.

* Noticed that my story 'Calliope: A Steam Romance' (from the Shadow Plays anthology) was given honourable mention in two 'Australian Years Best' lists by "Last Short Story" reviewers benpayne and random_alex. Not too bad for my first published story, I reckon! :)

* Went with the family to the zoo. My mum and dad won us a family pass in some competition. It was a great day and, as usual, we all got a bit sunburnt despite the 30+ cream and the overcast day. I got lots of great photos of the gorillas, chimps and the meercats, and the kids had a ball. I'm always impressed by Taronga Zoo. This time, the new elephant house was one of the highlights. But, the bird show (wedge tailed eagles flying over your head, ruffling your hair with their feathers as they pass) was the real jaw-dropper for me. Every bird, from cockatoo to owl and eagle was just absolutely amazing, and all so majestic.

* Saw The Golden Compass and quite enjoyed it. The books are amongst my favourites, being beaten as best YA series only by Philip Reeve's "Mortal Engines Quartet" (known as the "Hungry City Chronicles"). I was dreading what the filmakers and producers might have done, but all in all it was a pretty faithful adaptation. A bit rushed for the first half, and some who haven't read the book might have trouble keeping up, but to settles into the story a little better in the 2nd half. I was annoyed to hear they probably will not be making the next two books into films, especially as they ended this one in such a stupid spot.

Anyway, that's about it. The kids are back to school tomorrow (WAHOO!) and I'll really be able to getting back into good working habits again.
