I hate these hot, sticky days! And this house is not exactly made for catching the breeze either.

I've never really thought of these things because I've never worked from home in Summer, but now... I think I'm going to need an air-conditioner in my office! We do have an air-conditioner, in the dining room, but it's old and costs a fortune, and my office is in the other end of the house. It would cost a fortune to cool down the entire house every day just to keep one person, in one room, comfortable.

I've got a fair bit of work done today, except for one very perplexing problem where I'm not sure if it is a) some, hitherto unknown, web browser-bug that only effects one user in the world, or b) the client reporting the error is just having us on because they couldn't work things out in the beginning. The more I try and find a reason to suit option a) the more likely it seems the me that option b) is the answer. Nevertheless, I keep looking, and the problem keeps gnawing away at my mind.

But! It's too hot to do anything else today and I've got a roast dinner to cook before Kylie gets home (a roast dinner in this weather? I'm a glutton for punishment.)

Roast beef marinated in garlic, mustard and red wine
roast potatoes
roast sweet potato
roast carrot
roast onion
fresh string beans lightly boiled and served with taragon butter
a bottle of 2001 Victorian Taltarni Cabernet Sauvignon.

That's the menu for tonight. And then we'll watch Mythbusters, get the kids to bed, skip Southpark (because it's getting silly) and chat until it's time for Father Bob! Speaking in Tongues (SBS, 9.00pm Monday nights) has very quickly become our most favourite show. Who'd have thought my favourite TV personality would turn out to be a grumpy old Catholic Priest!? Wonders never cease.

an alternative with carrot is to julienne carrots and sweede, steam them then toss them in a butter, ginger and brown sugar mixture for ten minutes before serving. Goes very well with roast beef! (the ginger can be grated fresh, pieces or ground, or even a lovely splash of Stones Green *g* C'mon, you didn't expect granny to proffer a recipe without alcohol did you?)

And I wouldn't waste the Stones on cooking! You'd burn off all the alcohol, and then what would be the point of that!?

Yes, I cooked it, we ate it! It was very yummy. I'm one of those strange people who actually likes to eat my own cooking after 3hours in a hot kitchen :)

good lord that sounds tasty, but I agree you're insane for cooking it in this weather :) Hope it tasted as good as it sounds :D

Meanwhile, I FEEL YOUR PAIN re the heat. I've given the dudes in the room next door the fan and the flyscreen for the window so I was roasting today. Still, when I'm theoretically in control of the work conditions I figure it's more important for them to be almost comfortable than for me to be.

I gacked another old flyscreen from my folks tonight as a result. Ezri is too interested in the Big World Outside to risk her with an open window, unfortunately... One of the down sides of having a cat in a 5th floor apartment :)

Meanwhile, have you thought about a portable air conditioner? They're expensive to run but very effective in short bursts in a small contained area. Ours is great - in fact I've sent Sam off to dig it out of storage ready to use tomorrow...

The only thing I don't like abut Father Bob is that I didn't find out about the show till last week. I missed three episodes. Three!!

The marriage counselling bit tonight was strange for me. If you marry someone from a different background then you have to work harder at the marriage, but it doesn't mean you should just say "no".

I suppose for women you can marry outside Judaism without the problem at all as your children would still be Jewish.

I can see the point he was making, as it relates to the tenets of Judaism and the ancestry being traced matrilineally, but I definitely don't agree with it. And even if I did agree his way of putting it was decidedly fanatical.

The fact that all my children would have been Jewish didn't help when I had a Catholic boyfiend. Many frenzied family consultations happened when they found out. If I had married him, I would have lost about 25% of my family. I come from a fairly religious backgorund though, and so the reactions were stronger. I have lots of friends who have married out without big traumas. Even my family was not nearly as bad as the guy on TV, though. John Safran went to Yeshivah (rather fundamentalist) and it shows in his choice of Jewish opinions.

Now I'm really hungry. That sounds awsome. I have a slow cooker I use in the summer to make such wonderful things. And for some reason I hardly use it in the winter. Go figure.

I'll happily provide you with some cheap, natural A/C. Woke up this morning to a chipper -3C, lemme fan some your way...lol

Spare some for me, too. I need about 10 degrees of cool right now.

-TACKLES- oh god, you sound exactly like my dad! He makes a damn brilliant roast, no matter what the weather! Though I agree, working over an oven in an unairconditioned house (exactly like us) is punishing! -hugs- I bet your lady will be most impressed though ^___^

Bugger ='( I love Mythbusters, but always manage to miss it! Father Bob? Never heard of him. It's certainly interesting when people speak in Tongues though. I saw a freaking six year old who was genuinely gifted to speak it! I couldn't believe my eyes or ears xD

Yep, you're right. I probably do need a slave driver to keep me posting. Although now I've set a time of evening/night for my posts I should be able to keep up with your demands :)
